Welcome! Starting online school can feel like a lot at first, but you do not need to learn everything in one day. Complete these steps with your Learning Coach, and contact Mr. Flowers whenever you need help.
Before Your First Live Class
Log into Canvas and make sure you can see your courses.
Review the weekly class plan and student schedule.
Learn how to open Engageli and join a live class.
Test your microphone, speakers, camera, and internet connection.
Find a quiet learning space and gather your school materials.
Attend the welcome or orientation meeting.
Save Mr. Flowers’ contact information.
What to Expect
Students will attend scheduled live classes and complete additional lessons in Canvas. Learning Coaches should help students stay organized, begin school on time, and ask for help when something is confusing.Connection calls take place about every 20 school days. The student must be present because these are friendly student check-ins, not just parent-teacher meetings.
Parent & Learning Coach Guide
Learning Coaches are an important part of a student’s success at California Virtual Academies. Fourth-grade students are becoming more independent, but they still need regular adult support to stay organized, complete assignments, attend live classes, and ask for help when needed.
What a Champion Learning Coach Should Do.
Help your student begin school on time each morning.
Review the student’s daily and weekly assignments in Canvas.
Make sure your student attends required live classes.
Provide a quiet and appropriate place for learning.
Check that assignments are completed carefully rather than rushed.
Help your student develop a consistent daily routine.
Encourage your student to ask questions and communicate with Mr. Flowers.
Monitor attendance, course progress, and missing assignments.
Respond to school emails, texts, and phone calls.
Contact Mr. Flowers early when your student is struggling.
The goal is not for the Learning Coach to complete the work or provide every answer. Students should do their own thinking while the adult provides structure, encouragement, and accountability.
A Successful Daily Routine
Logging into Canvas and reviewing the day’s plan.
Attending scheduled live classes.
Completing assigned lessons and assessments.
Participating in physical activity.
Checking that all required work has been submitted before ending the school day.
Live Classes
Students are expected to attend all scheduled live classes.Before class, students should:
Log in a few minutes early.
Have their computer charged and ready.
Test their microphone, speakers, and internet connection.
Bring any requested materials.
Be ready to participate and respond.
Connection Calls
Connection calls are required about every 20 school days. These are friendly student check-ins. We may talk about school, hobbies, activities, pets, goals, and anything the student would like to share. The student must be present and participate.
Work Samples and Conferences
CAVA requires work samples each quarter. Families should:
Submit requested work samples by the deadline.
Save original student work when asked.
Attend required conferences.
Respond promptly when documentation is missing.
Contact Mr. Flowers with questions before a deadline passes.
One Shared Goal
Students are most successful when the student, Learning Coach, and teacher work as a team.My goal is to provide clear instruction, meaningful support, honest feedback, and a classroom environment where students feel respected and capable. I ask families to provide consistent routines, communication, encouragement, and accountability at home.Together, we can help students become more confident, independent, and successful learners.
Meet Mr. Flowers
Mr. Flowers is a fourth-grade teacher at California Virtual Academies. He has taught students from kindergarten through high school. He enjoys helping students learn, grow, and feel proud of their progress.Mr. Flowers grew up in Redlands, California. He is the father of three grown sons. He also has a friendly and energetic goldendoodle named Kali, who may sometimes appear during class or meetings.In his free time, Mr. Flowers enjoys photography, technology, movies, music, traveling, and visiting the beach. He also loves hamburgers and enjoys trying unusual soda flavors.Mr. Flowers earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University, San Bernardino, and a master’s degree in elementary education. He has special training in helping students who learn or think differently. He also cares deeply about supporting foster children and students who may need extra help.One of his favorite parts of teaching is hearing from former students and learning about the great things they are doing. Mr. Flowers is excited to get to know you and help you have a successful fourth-grade year!
